I was a published finalist and quarterly winner in the Writers of the Future Contest two years in a row (1998 and 1999). If you’re not interested in sci-fi, here’s the facts: the contest is a good way for writers in the field to get established. It is officially the “L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest,” and there is also an illustrator’s contest. This contest is and has been affiliated with the Church of Scientology. It provides generous cash prizes, a week of writing education, an annual anthology volume illustrated by the illustrator winners, and a glamorous and exciting annual awards event. Contest judges are luminaries of the field.
So, I have just seen a male with some relationship to the sci-fi field complaining publicly that a well-known female author (not somebody I know personally but it looks as if she’s had quite a career) touched his face, hair, coat, and hat at a public convention. He stated the female author was inebriated and did this to him. He complained to the convention committee. She was apparently the “Guest of Honor” at this event. She left the event (I guess voluntarily) and has cancelled all of her future appearances.
