Why Are There So Many Homeless People?
The answers are common sense — but it’s the same callous nightmare as everything else
I’ve been reading articles by other Medium writers about how they’ve moved to different countries and haven’t made any or many friends. My husband and I moved to Southwest Florida at the end of March 2020 and for a while, had only our next door neighbors as friends. We’ve since made more friends, as things are coming back to normal … supposedly. Many of our musician friends are sick with the current strain of COVID.
Maybe COVID is the new normal.
I’m part of a fast-growing group of women here in our area who want to do things together: kayaking, dancing, card games, book club, general going out and messing around. We have a weekly coffee meeting and when I tell people I’m from Southern California, or mention “my city” (Los Angeles), invariably they say — if they’ve visited recently —
there are so many homeless!
Yeah, I say. Yes, there are.
“I used to develop affordable housing and work with homeless families,” I say.
“Why are there so many homeless?” comes the invariable question.
