When I said I wanted to be a sci-fi writer to my boyfriend/fiance at the time, he lowered the book he was reading (by not-a-very-smart sci-fi writer) and said, "But you have to be smart to be a sci-fi writer." I checked up on him a few years ago - he didn't seem to be a very successful man.
