Well, this is an unselfconscious thing! Very typical of Medium. Michael, while I respect what you, I think, tried to do here, I think it’s unselfconsciously … douchey. First, that you would actually, as a white person, “teach” African American studies — well, let me think of an analogy, and I’ll use my own self as an example since my “go to” isn’t going to be somebody else and their experience. What if, for example, I were to endeavor to teach “Douchebag Studies”? I wouldn’t try! I would definitely not think I’d be qualified to teach that subject.
Now, as an individual, what I do, is write sci-fi stories about women. All ages, many different women. I teach regular English at a community college, too. I don’t depend on that for my income. I can write things like this here because I earn my own money myself by working directly with others.
That said, a couple of additional observations. 1) all your initial illustrations are of males in different racial stereotypes; 2) the second group of illustrations are of white males with generally poor reputations or some blowback; 3) the remainder of the article is all historical, primarily featuring the actual “douchebag” apparatus and advertisements.
Since you are writing on a site primarily devoted to “hipsters” and “douchebags,” no wonder it’s such a popular article! And guess what — there are even a few women who would never have been so stupid as to douche with LYSOL. Sheesh.
