And other tales of rich hoarders during Hurricane Ian
Immediately after Hurricane Ian, as Bruce, Gambit and I huddled in our soaking wet hotel room in Orlando, our television was overwhelmed with horrific images of devastated Fort Myers Beach and further south, Naples. Naples is a high-income community on the outskirts of Ian’s “cone,” but it was still inundated by up to 18 feet of storm surge.
One of the most notable images? A drowned McLaren P1. The McLaren P1 is a $1.15 million (USD) “hypercar,” a limited-production mid-engine plug-in hybrid — McLaren made only 375 of them and they sold out immediately —
“Ernie,” the owner of the McLaren and numerous other “supercars” has an Instagram account with over a million followers. I don’t know if he started out that way — nor do I know if he’s the same guy we saw a while back driving a Lamborghini slowly up and down Naples’ Fifth Avenue, the Gulf Coast version of Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive, showing off to local #BlackLivesMatter protestors.
