The Woman Always Chooses

When she is allowed to do so

First, let me clarify, I’m not writing about forced marriages such as the ones Nujood Ali and so many others have been forced to endure.

The absolute angriest and most recalcitrant I’ve ever seen a man is when I told a gentleman I’d been dating that I was breaking off our relationship because I’d gotten serious with the man I’m now married to.

“The woman always chooses,” I said.

You would have thought I told him he wasn’t well-endowed! This dude went flaming nuclear. The unpleasant situation told me that my opinion was backed up by reality.

It’s simple. Men, to this day, are expected to pursue women. Women, to this day, are expected to evade or engage with the pursuit by their choice. To this day in western culture, saying yes or no is our choice. Women don’t have choices in many areas of life, such as having equal opportunity on sites like this, equal opportunity to perform in various industries, or to become uber-wealthy. How many female billionaires are written about even here on this platform?

There’s an ongoing movement to erode such basic rights as the right to bear a child or not, but we do have the choice to say “yes” or “no” to a man who pursues us.
