Thank you for your thoughtful response, John! I think much of the time, Medium does provide a lot of authenticity. It helps us all communicate better.
I loved what you said about the ideals of prior leaders and the idea of uplifting everyone; it’s true we have a downward trend and hear little positive from our current leaders.
I am compelled to share current news. This is happening right now.
I just heard something from students that stunned me. First, out of a small class of 25 students, 3 were just — as in yesterday and the day before — laid off from their retail jobs. None had any advance warning. One student rattled off eight stores at the local mall that had closed — she had been laid off from BEBE. This is South Orange County, and I live a couple of miles from Laguna Beach. It is supposedly one of the wealthiest areas in SoCal.
Second, two other students knew people who were incarcerated for either minor crimes, or were actually innocent of the crimes for which they were serving time and both of these were in private prisons. One of these prisoners was in a completely different state, working in a private prison making jeans for a well-known retailer (not WalMart). And finally, a married couple from Iran shared that they had been ripped off of more than $1 million USD in a scheme to defraud Persians desiring to immigrate to the U.S. under the EB-5 VISA program: a program of which I had never heard. They have a huge Federal case that has been winding its way through the “justice” system.
The gap between what was covered in class and the reality of these students’ lives and what we often see on the Medium screen is incalculably vast.
PS — a lot of the writers I see who are the “paid” and “well-known” or celebrity or guru type Medium writers do not respond to people’s responses, regardless of the quality or interaction. It is so much a mark of a person’s genuine ability or character that they do respond and listen and you totally did. That is wonderful!!!
