On Medium also … I have actual work to do, but I put the top 35 stories from December into a chart. If I did the entire top 100 it would definitely present a depressing picture. This is a platform where Jon Krakauer has 2.5 times the number of “followers” that I have, and I have to be one of the more “followed” women over age 50 here — with like 250+ followers.
That said, on other social media platforms, I definitely see echo chamber behavior, and I have probably one of the more eclectic, international, multilingual and diverse follower/friend groups to look at.
Here on Medium, I noticed the “problem” when the incredibly long, boring articles (I’m gonna reboot my life and read more and drink less beer!) by semi-celebrities were being shared … well on Facebook it’s attention-whores all the way around. Now that there’s an election that seems like it could be Hillary vs. The Donald — there’s some “quality” for ya!
That led me to notice there’s a direct 1:1 correlation between this type of social media behavior and “entertainment” or “thought quality” of the individual who does it. I can think of only one exception — a guy who’s super diehard on one political side who, aside from that, is a wonderful writer and a great person. I cut him some slack.
David Gerrold? Not so much.
