One of the main ways I differ from actual Baby Boomers, more than just they could have driven to Woodstock rather than going to bed with a glass of warm milk shortly after playing with my Etch-A-Sketch, is that I graduated from college in 1983. Although I did have a sort of halcyon 80s-style Billionaire Boys Club love affair with my 2nd fiance, a petroleum heir who could easily outdo Christian Bale in American Psycho for perfect 80s-ness, reality soon struck. It took me well over a year after graduating to move beyond a collection of lousy part-time jobs (ward clerk, car salesperson, newspaper reporter, radio reporter) to a single full-time job that paid the bills.
I started work at the United Way in my So Cal hometown for $28,000 a year in 1984. I bet if I look now there will be dozens of similar jobs in other charities in smaller communities … for just about that same amount of pay.
Oh! Yeah … check it out … this is literally 49 years later, this is the same job, different state. Don’t tell yourself, “Oh, it’s Florida,” I guarantee I will find…
