It is greed, pure and simple. There are many tens of thousands of people right now who are going to be pushed out onto the streets. I will only say that people continuously blame Reagan for this and it is true that the financial and cultural policies that have resulted in today's disaster and the downgrading of the US middle class and working class accelerated during Reagan's time. You will find another article I wrote about REITs that contribute to the problem of ever-escalating rents and unaffordability - those were part of the 1962 "Tobacco Bill." This is NOT Reagan, and the worst abuses of the homeless as well as their current oppression, including the thousands of vacant units of affordable housing into which it is apparently impossible to place qualified residents: those are done by the "other" (supposed) "political party." It has been 4 decades since Reagan. Ample time to rectify the problems he is supposedly personally and exclusively responsible for. I worked in this industry for 15 years of my working life and everything I state in this article was true 20 years ago and remains true today, with even more oppression, harm, and attacks against the poor, mentally-ill, and individuals with substance use disorders. Reagan himself, has been dead nearly 20 years. Stop blaming Reagan.
