I'm looking at all the comments and I absolutely get how Black Americans would say what the commenters are saying. My husband Bruce and I, whom both of us grew up in integrated schools/neighborhoods (Philly/Hollywood - but the small town I grew up in was segregated in terms of the richest neighborhood being pure white and wealthy - I grew up on the "wrong" side of town, the integrated side) - we were basically forced to move out of California in 2020 bc as older adults, one retired, we could no longer afford rents that are now 2 and 3x what we were paying (at over $2k/mo) - so we moved to Florida where I immediately said to Bruce, "That sign 'Deed Restricted' - I think it means no Black people." Absolutely, and there are similar non-stated signs in So Cal - entire neighborhoods and buildings 100% white. I know all the LA Basin and basically all So Cal and there *are* integrated neighborhoods and schools despite the extreme segregation and poverty that is the area's history. The savagery of the extreme racist right wing is absolutely out there and I do live in a Southern state now. When we look at how extremely impoverished emotionally, spiritually, and just - I can't even count the ways - white people who would prefer to live in a racially segregated neighborhood are, who would want to be their neighbors? This isn't somebody who's gonna be particularly "neighborly" if they detect anything diverse about their neighbor and the absolute WORST of this type are not Trump MAGA Republicans. It's another type which would be the "other" so-called 'political party'. They've got layer upon layer of dishonesty and entitlement and just this poisonous mass of - ugh. We have two such neighbors and they are the ones always making things harder for everyone else and seeking for themselves. Yes, Trump attracts hardcore racists but the worst to me is the one who thinks they are not racist at all, yet can't form decent relationships or be decent to others in reality - to them, it's all about them ... thanks for listening, Alison, I appreciate all of your well-researched and presented work.
