Growing up in the 70s, it was hard to miss Richard Simmons. He was on TV every day. Like a vibrant ball of energy, Richard lit up our lives —

Was Richard Simmons “cool”?

I always thought so. But Richard was often the butt of jokes at school. His high-energy routines for the overweight, out-of-shape, and elderly provided endless fodder for immature kids and talent show skits.

This a.m., Richard turned up on my social media, saying,

“For as long as I can remember, people have made fun of me. And people still to this day make fun of me. But you know what? I am glad to be me! And you should be glad that you are you.”

Weight wasn’t my biggest problem, though it was one of my biggest fears.

I used to watch the big people exercising on Richard Simmons’ show. I loved his ever-present kindness. His large-hearted enthusiasm.
