I wonder if what happened to Alice may not be true for a much greater percentage of creative breakthroughs in many endeavors — not just medicine, but other science and technology and the arts. The same thing happened to my mother — she was a pioneering female animation art director. Her bosses and even some coworkers said they’d done the work for which she had won Academy Awards after she died. After my husband and I saw the film “Big Eyes,” I researched and found many female artists whose work was sold as male “masters” similarly to Margaret Keane.
I know several female writers who wrote part or even all of the work for which their male partners or spouses have been highly paid (bestsellers) and awarded.
