I remember that so well, Frances! What a ridiculous thing - even at that time I wondered why that was a good ad for that product. I started semesters teaching narrative writing by giving students a list of 50 diverse "badasses" or interesting others who were not covered in US high schools to select and write about - not bios, just brief narratives of interesting things they'd done. I tried to put on more women than men. I tried to be global and encompassing, and always removed/added based on student interest. What you say is true of not just Asian, but basically every part of the world not UK, US, EU. Off the top of my head I remember Wu Zetian, Mochizuki Chiyome, and Rani Lakshmi Bai. It all started when I noticed how female scientists were so overlooked, and I saw a documentary of "Percy Julian, Forgotten Genius." Percy, a Black American, was only the second Black man to receive a PhD. in US. Love you Frances have a peaceful and blessed weekend.
