I know what you're saying is true, Ira, and it tears my heart out. My husband and I don't make that much but we make enough to take care of our needs, have a house we love, and can travel. The situation you are in with your wife and children is absolutely wrong. We value the wrong things in our society. We don't value life, we don't value our experiences with friends and family: it's only money, and it's only the people with the most money who have any type of freedom. As a sci fi writer I am supposed to be able to imagine the answers. I am still working on it -- and in my case, I have to do paying work first. It should go without saying what type of fiction gets the most money. Not the type that suggests a better way to live.
