Here is a quote from my story "Perfect Stranger" which was indeed published in the Jan 2005 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction and republished in Norton anthologies, and has quite a bit of student readership - I started writing it in 2003, wasn't ready, and finished it about six months after my baby's death (you could read about that pinned to my profile, but our world devotes attention to people like this absolutely bonkers Collins couple - easy lives, money, travel, the woman gets to do whatever) - here is a quote from the gene therapy doctor in the story ... hm ... TWO DECADES AGO I wrote this - "“Well,” he said, smiling. “Years ago, we discovered that viruses could be effective transports to load different types of DNA into human— or any other type— of brains. Now we’ve identified a specific enzyme or cocktail of enzymes that enhances almost every type of brain function. We load the enzymes into a virus, which then transcribes the DNA, and delivers the desired changes to what we once thought were ‘unchangeable’ brain cells. I’m sure you’ve heard of people building up their ‘extra-sensory perception.’” Again, this was published in the #1 literary sci fi magazine in 2005, and as I noted, I'd learned the ideas reading scientific literature 2 decades ago. And what I made of that was the story - and absolutely what this insane couple wants? Should not be done, the technology is meant to heal and help, not create "living Gods" or whatever these freaks think.
