Hello Sacha - thank you for following me. This is an excellent overview of patriarchy and the many harms that it causes to all humans. It's an ugly topic, but the maintenance of structures that protect deviant criminal behavior is a part of patriarchy which is seldom openly discussed. I write about it here on Medium and get zero "views" - there are only a handful of views on my article about the Bystander Initiative at University of Utah. It is led by Prof. Amos Guiora - I learned about his extensive work that started with examining the role of bystanders in the Holocaust. He has a team of legal researchers/scholars who are investigating campus and other organizational sex crimes (MSU/Larry Nassar, Catholic Church priest victims, Ohio State). One offender such as Larry Nassar (or the man who raped me at the Claremont Colleges) will have many victims, often into the hundreds. There are literal "bystanders" who make their continued crimes possible. While the accounts of the Catholic Church priest abuse usually feature other male priests overlooking or even supporting the abuse, as well as covering up for it - when it's someone like Nassar or my offender - it turns out to be women who are facilitating the process. Amos believes this is because the "Bystanders" protect the institution in preference to their clear knowledge that crimes are occurring - I personally believe it's more along the lines of what you are writing here. Using the example of the female dean at my school, who quite obviously didn't care that I'd been raped and probably wouldn't have batted an eye if he'd murdered me (like I thought he was going to do) - Amos thinks this type of woman "hates" other women and maybe some do. But most of all, the patriarchy teaches them to have loyalty and to defend and protect the male offender. I think it is beyond "institutional" loyalty and is a deep seated belief that while they know the man is doing wrong and committing crimes, they believe he has a RIGHT to do so. Thereby saying openly, the victims have NO RIGHTS and are not human. Fundamentally. That is how she treated me, and that is how I read the many victims outlined in Amos' work to be treated. And what they say as well - from priest victims to our Olympic Gold medalists that Larry Nassar violated with zero penalty for decades - by the way, MSU called the FBI in when reports about his abuse of female gymnasts became very numerous in 2015. The gymnasts are now negotiating a $1 billion settlement with the FBI because the FBI responded: to protect Nassar. State of Michigan is what brought him down, finally.
