Hello Laura - it seems this is an older article, but you are still writing on Medium. What a harrowing and tragic story, of how you and the other innocent children in your family suffered.

Here in the U.S., some legal scholars and a few elected representatives are proposing the Bystander Initiative which will criminalize the people who support and enable abusers like your grandfather. It sounds like, from what I've read, that some of your family members might have been given criminal penalties for protecting him and covering up for him - if such initiatives ever do become law.

In the U.S. - it's one in five girls, one in 20 boys - sexually abused, and yes, usually by a family member or trusted authority figure. All protected - the only way they continue.
