Hello Benjamin - I think what is going on is WAY beyond words and categories. Someone is either decent and responsible and a trustworthy member of their community and the larger society, or they are not. I am highly open to new experience and people and I have a highly diverse background. I have worked in 5 different careers successfully and am embarking on my 6th. I was a college teacher for 20 yrs, and I am a text and test author as well as a fiction writer. I have been a for-profit business developer, and a nonprofit housing and economic development officer and elected commissioner. I'm not rich, and my family has experienced the negative impacts of colonialism, capitalism, imperialism, patriarchy, and racism - over and over - not just on this continent but Europe and Asia as well. Above all, I am one of the very few female hard sci fi writers and I'm one with the context to comprehend larger trends. Maybe not like Octavia Butler, but I come from the same place. There is no accident that Los Angeles is being consumed by fires that cannot be extinguished right now. No accident, I guess, that I and millions of others have been impacted by every horrible action and inaction over the past 60 years in that state, as well as my forebears. No, labels don't matter. But I'm open-minded and tolerant. Non-destructive humans, plants, animals, and the planet itself are in literal fights for our lives right now. It is time for practice and action to survive. The larger group and ecosystem against the threat.
