I am generally known as a kind person.

I did know his father was a Ford family attorney and though I’ve never been to Florida, I’m generally aware of the area where they live.

I wrote what I wrote because I saw Elizabeth Beck had gone to the man’s funeral and apparently tried to livestream it on Twitter. I also saw on his memorial page that every single response was from a social media account which struck me as so sad. I always thought it was so weird that his diehard followers didn’t “get” the meaning of Alan Smithee (at first I thought he was a Hollywood lawyer) or Joe Bob Dobbs/Subgenius. Those two say “I’m funnin’ ya” pretty loud and clear and his description also said that. He also obviously didn’t want to be sued or attract any unwanted Clinton attention (a real fear).

My debate in writing it was “Do we need another memorial or epitaph of another guy like this?”

I decided yes because I will always err on the side of humane. I think there were plenty of humane people who followed Smithee. My final deciding factor was because of his family. I wouldn’t want to lose someone and have the only responses be cultlike online anonymous people.

As to me, personally, he reminded me of someone — a someone who wouldn’t have pulled a gun on a guy in traffic or had any type of DV or cursed me out because I said a scurrilous opportunistic racist trashfire of a man was a racist. So I treated him as I would have and did treat my real life former fiance, who died in 2011. Someone who had inside of him, the seeds of greatness, but who did not fulfill that promise and instead, had his life cut short by addiction, unhappiness, depression and ennui.

I’m pretty sure Smithee would have gotten the “Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” reference. I can’t believe he put Mensa on his attorney website. Sheesh.
