I’m starting to wonder if there is any limit to the depths that capitalism can plumb when it comes to exploiting and harming children, young adults, women, and people of color for cash.

I get a lot of health industry publications because of the type of business development work I do, as well as the nonfiction books I often write. I was stunned this week to read that the American Association of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued new guidelines for healthcare practitioners for obese or overweight children which include the recommendation for bariatric surgery for OBESE CHILDREN AGE 13 AND OLDER to treat obesity.

That’s right. They want to staple a kid’s stomach as soon as they turn 13. The average cost of bariatric surgery is $15,000 to $30,000 and for lap band surgery, $8,000 to $15,000.

The average cost of switching from processed foods to real foods is: zero, maybe even a cost savings.

There is not one thing in the AAP guidelines that mentions that the first thing a doctor should do with a child who is gaining weight is refer the child and parent to a qualified nutritionist. And tell the parent to eliminate processed foods from the child’s diet.
