All true, William. As a young woman when the first trial was going on, I was positive OJ had not only abused Nicole, he had murdered her & Ron. When Black people reacted totally opposite to the way I felt, I started wondering what was going on. Here I am an LA person and I didn't truly understand how much worse Black people were treated by LAPD even with the Rodney King beating (I knew that was wrong). It took me years to learn the full picture.
So, I have a good story that came out of the OJ trial. I used to teach rhetoric & composition & we covered formal logic & argument. One of the concepts was the "enthymeme." And Johnny Cochran did the perfect enthymeme - "If the glove does not fit - you must acquit." He didn't say the second part (the glove did NOT fit). One of my students, a football player who was barely hanging in there with school, athletics, and taking care of his mom & disabled brother, was motivated to learn more about Johnny Cochran after hearing this story. He stayed in school, improved his grades, and transferred to George Washington University. He is now a practicing lawyer in Chicago. Thanks to Johnny Cochran our textbook, and the OJ story. Already by that time, young students didn't know much about OJ. I remember the days when OJ was the top, handsome football star, and then TV actor. What a story.
